What to wear to Pilates: how to choose the right outfit

Whether you are about to start classes or have been practising for a while and want to get your outfit right, the rule is simple: the best Pilates clothes fit close to the body without squeezing, stay in place when you lie down, roll or lift your legs, and let your posture be seen. In Pilates your instructor needs to see how your hips, knees and spine are aligned, and you need to forget about your clothes for fifty minutes.

Below we go through which garments work, what fabrics and fits to look for, how to adapt your outfit to mat or reformer and the most common mistakes in the first few classes.

The basics of Pilates clothing

A Pilates outfit does not need many pieces. What matters is that each one does its job.

Fitted leggings

They are the base of almost every Pilates outfit. Fitted leggings let the instructor see the line of your legs and the position of your knees, they do not catch on the springs or straps of the reformer and they do not slide when you work with your legs in the air. Look for a waistband that stays firm when you curl your torso: in exercises such as the roll up or the teaser you will notice straight away if it slips or rolls down.

In our leggings collection you will find full-length fitted styles and flare versions, looser at the hem, which many students keep for mat classes or for walking to the studio and heading out afterwards without changing.

Top or sports bra

Pilates is low impact, so you do not need high support. What does matter is that your top does not ride up when you lie on your back or leave you exposed during inversions. A sports bra with a good elastic band or a fitted strappy top is usually the most comfortable option. You can browse our sports bras, where several styles state low or medium support on their product page, suitable for low-impact disciplines.

A light layer for the start and the end

The first minutes of class and the final relaxation often call for something on top, especially in winter. A zip-up jacket, easy to take off without interrupting the session, is more practical than a sweatshirt you have to pull over your head.

Grip socks

Many studios ask for them for hygiene and safety, especially on the reformer. If they are not required, practising barefoot is also common on the mat. Ask your studio before your first class.

Fabric and fit: what really makes the difference

You do not need high-performance technical gear for Pilates, but you do need a fabric that moves with you.

Lea Top in Milky, a fitted top that stays in place during Pilates

  • Four-way stretch. Polyamide (nylon) and elastane blends are common in activewear because they recover their shape after stretching. If the fabric gives and does not bounce back, you will spend the class adjusting your clothes between exercises.
  • Opacity. Pilates involves a lot of hip flexion and all-fours positions. Do the squat test in front of a mirror in good light before wearing new leggings to class.
  • Soft feel and flat seams. You spend much of the class lying or sitting on the mat. Thick seams or stiff labels are noticeable.
  • Moderate compression. A light sense of hold feels pleasant and keeps the garment in place. Too much compression can be uncomfortable in long stretches.

Before buying, always check the composition and notes on each product page: not every garment from the same brand shares the same fabric or level of compression.

What to wear depending on the type of Pilates

Mat Pilates

On the floor you have more freedom. Fitted or flare leggings, a comfortable top and a light layer work well. If you like to walk to the studio, a matching set lets you go straight from home.

Zip Jacket in Stone, a light layer to wear before and after class

Reformer Pilates

Here it pays to be stricter about fit. Loose garments can catch on the springs, pulleys or carriage, and very wide hems can get in the way when you place your feet on the bar. Choose fitted or capri leggings, a top without loose straps and socks with grip.

Gentle or therapeutic Pilates

If your classes are slower paced, comfort comes first: soft fabrics, a waistband that does not press and an extra layer so you do not get cold during slow exercises.

Three Pilates outfits to copy

Once you know the rules, putting a look together is easy. These three combinations follow the same logic (a fitted base, a top that stays put and a layer you can remove in seconds) but suit different kinds of class.

Cael Shorts in Toasted, a warm-weather outfit for mat Pilates

The neutral all-rounder

Start with the Ofelia Flare Milky leggings: mid rise, with compression around the glutes, made in Kosmo fabric and OEKO-TEX certified. Add the Lea Top in Milky and, for the first and last minutes of class, the Zip Jacket in Stone, made in a breathable Soft fabric. Everything sits in the same cream-to-stone palette, so it reads as a set even if you bought the pieces separately.

The fitted look for the reformer

On the reformer, less loose fabric means fewer surprises. The Invisible Scrunch Shorts in black with a bra such as the Halter Bra in black keep everything close to the body, and you can add leggings when the studio is cold. If your studio is happy with flares, the Invisible Scrunch Flare Leggings (75% nylon, 25% spandex, medium compression) are a good option; just check the hem length before you put your feet on the bar.

The warm-weather mat look

For summer classes or heated studios, try the Cael Shorts in Toasted: high rise, UPF 50+ and Kosmo fabric. Pair them with the Carina Top in Toasted and you have a light, matching set. You can see more options in our shorts collection or in the essentials collection, where the simplest pieces to mix and match live.

Common mistakes when choosing a Pilates outfit

  1. Clothes that are too loose. Baggy T-shirts fall over your face when you invert and hide the alignment your instructor needs to see.
  2. See-through leggings. It is the most common complaint. Check opacity before class, not during it.
  3. Zips, buttons or embellishments on the back. They get in the way in every exercise lying on your back.
  4. A waistband that slips. If you have to pull your leggings up after every exercise, the size or cut is not right.
  5. Forgetting about your hair. A high ponytail or a bun at the nape can be uncomfortable when you lie down. A claw clip or a low braid is usually a better option.

How to build a Pilates outfit you also wear outside the studio

One of the advantages of Pilates is that its clothes fit easily into everyday life. A set in neutral tones, flare leggings with a matching top and a light jacket will take you to class, to run errands or for a coffee afterwards. To choose pieces that go together, think of a short palette of two or three colours and repeat it: that way any top works with any pair of leggings.

If you want a top with a little more coverage than a sports bra, take a look at our activewear tops. And for the warm layer, our jackets and hoodies with a zip are easy to put on and take off between exercises.

Your Pilates bag checklist

A little preparation makes the class more relaxed. Before you leave the house, run through this list:

KIE 30oz insulated stainless steel bottle to take to Pilates class

  • Your outfit, tried at home. Do the squat test and a few roll-ups in the mirror. If anything slips, change it now.
  • Grip socks. Even if your studio sells them, having your own pair avoids surprises.
  • A light layer. A zip jacket or a hoodie such as the Lucy Zip Hoodie in Toasted folds into a bag easily and keeps your shoulders warm during the final relaxation.
  • Water. The KIE 30oz bottle is insulated stainless steel and holds about 887 ml, enough for a whole session and the walk home.
  • Hair accessories. A pink hair clip or the KIE high-performance headband keeps hair away from your face when you roll down. More small extras are in our accessories collection.

If you are unsure about your size, the size guide explains how to measure yourself so the waistband and legs sit exactly where they should. And if you want to know who is behind these pieces, you can read about us on the About us page.

Frequently asked questions about Pilates clothes

Can you do Pilates in wide-leg trousers?

On the mat it is possible, although it makes it harder for the instructor to correct the position of your knees and hips. On the reformer it is not recommended, because the fabric can catch on the machine.

Do you need trainers for Pilates?

No. Pilates is practised barefoot or in grip socks. Trainers are only for getting to the studio.

Which sports bra is best for Pilates?

One with low or medium support that stays in place when you lie down and has no back fastenings that dig into the mat.

High-rise or mid-rise leggings for Pilates?

It depends on what feels comfortable. A high rise tends to stay more stable during torso curls; a mid rise may feel nicer if you do not like pressure on your stomach. What matters is that it does not move.

Should I buy a whole outfit before my first class?

No. For a first class, fitted leggings and a comfortable top you already own are enough. Once you know whether you prefer mat or reformer, you can invest in pieces that suit how you practise. Our basics collection is a good starting point.

Can I wear shorts for Pilates?

Yes, as long as they stay in place when you lift your legs. High-rise shorts are the most stable. Some people prefer leggings on the reformer for the extra coverage and grip against the carriage.

How often should I wash my Pilates clothes?

After every class, ideally at a low temperature and without fabric softener, which can reduce elasticity over time.

Before your next class

Choose fitted leggings that are not see-through, a top that does not ride up when you lie down and a light layer that is easy to take off. With those three pieces you are ready for most classes, on the mat or on the reformer.
